Attended another SPRITE river clean up on Saturday (followed by more lovely fishing of course!!)
The team were so efficient that I couldn't get a "before" shot of this half skip full of trash:

However, half an hour earlier all of that trash was spread liberally around this area of the bank:

Unfortunately, we also knew that the areas of one of our previous cleanups had seen some unwelcome visitors just after Christmas:

This is Liversey Street Bridge in Sheffield

Because the bags were so flimsy (and had probably been split open by rats etc.) we had to re-bag the waste which was a mixture of empty/broken booze bottles, party plates and lots and lots of rancid food..

Anyone for dips?

Craig is a member of SPRITE even though he is not (yet!) an angler:

The re-bagging of sloppy, stinking waste did throw up some interesting contents when bags split though...

Such as this drivers' tipping record (which was also accompanied by the tacograph from the vehicle)

Along with the registration plate of the white transit that was witnessed dumping this separate pile (challenged by the operators of the nearby Coopers' scrap yard - who also supplied the registration details: many thanks)

When re-bagged, the waste was shifted in half a dozen trips in two SPRITE volunteers' vehicles (a pickup and transit van) over the half mile or so to the skip provided by Street Force for our cleanup.

So that the remaining half of the skip was filled with the re-bagged waste

To leave the "after" shot looking like this:

Freeing us up to take off the gloves, wash and disinfect our hands!! And tuck into Beres' Pork Shop finest pork, crackling and stuffing breadcakes that John Blewitt and his wife Kath brought down in the car (John is recovering from back surgery so was excused - just about - from humping trash!)
WE ALWAYS FOLLOW UP ON FLY TIPPING INCIDENTS AND WE ALWAYS PROSECUTE. If ever you are tempted, don't do it coz we'll get you in the end (and then we'll go fishing). We know the arrangements for official waste disposal can be awkward; but the river-bank will not be tolerated as an alternative dump site.
