I think the Ridge line is a classic case of 'The Emperors New Clothes' . . . . . . .. .

I believe the idea behind the design is that with the ridges there is less surface area of the line in contact with the guides/rings!! Thus there is less friction to slow the line down = less of the speed generated by the casting action is lost. I Think.

I'm sure you are right, that is the logic. Unfortunately the less surface area probably means higher wear rates. Does anyone have any experience of this?

No idea about the wear rates, but it definitely works, I've got a couple of ridge lines and they certainly whiz out past the guides quicker than other lines.

However, if I improved my casting, I think the difference between these lines and traditional ones would be negligible.

Great lines, cast well, lie poker straight in the water BUT if you use 1 for more than a couple of hours it takes the skin of your finger.

Since they first came out ,they have changed them, for the better.
The idea was that the ridges would trap air in the grooves, and help them float higher in the water and when you lift it off, comes off easier with less pull of the water.
The first ones were very rough and I found that you could feel it and it just didnt feel right, plus the old memory was still there aswell, was quite thick and I didnt like it.It was like holding string.
The new ones are alot better and the grooves are still there ,but you cant feel them hardly now and the memory is,nt as bad.
The life span given at the time was 5 years and there was a guarantee on them for this. The first ones, would probably last that by the size of the grooves.
Imo I would say the grooves will wear as all lines tend to do,with grit and mud,as realistically how many clean their lines after use,I dont, then we will end up with the normal line without grooves.

It is a clever idea and can see the principle behind it,but is a bit of a gimmick, but an interesting one.

Kevin I think your trapped air theory is just that LOL.
This is Airflows statement on the line.

Ex-racing driver and Airflo Pro Staff team member Masahara Katsumata is always looking for an edge. So when Airflo came up with their latest flyline concept, based on tyre technology, he was the perfect choice to help develop it.

Airflo had a good hunch what the effect of running ridges along the entire line would have on reducing friction and improving shootability they were right and Masa has his edge. The concept is simplicity itself , the unique ridged design of the Airflo Ridge Tactical Trout Fly Line reduces the surface area in contact with the rod guides, consequently friction levels are vastly improved compared to any regular round flyline.
