Default Help! Weed attack

Hi Guys
We have a small still water club but we are under serious attack from this weed. It has totally choked one end of the lake and looks like it is spreading.

It first appered on the scene I'd say about 3 years ago or less. There are 3 small drain inlets into the lake and 2 of them, which are ajacent to a farm, run into the corner which has this weed.

Would anyone have any idea what we can do to prevent the spread of this weed or what kind of weed it is???

Any help would be much appreciated

I've heard a few bales of barley straw in the water may help slow it down, though won't stop it from reappearing. Although you will have to clear it to get rid, there's no 'quick fix'.

Hi, The small reservoir i fish at has been "under attack" from this weed for a long time now, It gets so bad sometimes that it leaves one bank completely unfishable. We just go out every so often and cut it away, a little manual labour dont do any harm. its a real pain though.
hope you manage to get rid of it.
on the plus side, its a great fish holding area.

Thanks stuart
We have barley straw bales across the centre of the lake to help with the alge. Should we put the barley straw into this corner as well?? Or across the mouth of it to prevent it spreading anymore??

Canadian Pondweed great in the aquarium, a nightmare in the wild. It will be very difficult to get rid of as every bit that breaks off has the ability to grow roots and propagate.

This might give you some ideas.

Looks like Canadian Pond Weed to me. Probably very difficult to eradicate. Ask SEPA if there is a chemical method that would work on such a large body of water.

Sorry, I couldn't tell you with any accuracy. A small fishery I call at from time to time suffers from the same problem. The manager has told me the straw helps, but to what extent I couldn't tell you.

Though I will say he often has to wade and clear it by hand, so it will only be piecemeal help.

PETER , im sure you used to be able to get some stuff that you mixed with sand that took it straight to the bottom ,but as far as im aware you can only treat so much at a time because it may cause oxygen depletion to some extent
and as fishtales says , definitely canadian pondweed , some people even intoduced grass carp to there fisheries(coarse) to reduce it (they eat it to some extent)
