Default Hello, question about Stroft leaders and tippets

Hello, I'm new to the forum and am looking for some advice. I'm a fly fishing equipment retailer that carries Froghair leaders and tippets. Unfortunately, Gamma (the company the owns FH) is selling the brand and halting production. I have been approached by a vendor of Stroft to be a retailer of that product as a replacement. Unfortunately, I know nothing about the quality/reliablility of Stroft and haven't been able to find much online. I am located in Texas and since it is a European product, I thought I'd come here and see if I can get some opionions on it. I only want to offer quality merchandise to my customers, so I'd appreciate the help. Thanks in advance...

I find it excellent for river nymphing - it is a relatively limp copolymer (much more supple than fluorocarbon) with a low diameter for its breaking strain. It is also very abrasion resistant (the Canadian angler Todd Oishi was particularly impressed with this aspect when he was introduced to the material by Jiri Klima in the Czech republic). It also retains a very high proportion of its breaking strain after knotting (the label on the spool indicates the percentage of un-knotted breaking strain that results when using a few common knots).

As mentioned in the above post - a really large number of world rivers competition anglers use it almost exclusively for subsurface fishing.

Stroft has a pretty impressive following, i think its still cheaper for us to buy in the US so if you have any 5x on the tiny little 50m spools i'd be interested, the bigger spools are a bit of a pocket full.

Default Stroft material for leaders etc.

Hello to Texas,

I'm not sure if you've seen this, but details of Stroft are available here. WAKU GmbH - STROFT Fishing Lines

The one I've used is the GTM version. The ABR type is available also, but I've not used it. GTM gives a good balance between diameter, strength and 'impact resistance' which I've not found in the fluorocarbons and other 'modern miracle material' lines I've tried.

It's not scientific, but I feel as though I've found a material I can trust for leaders which does the job I want it to.

Good luck, I hope it takes off.

I always swore by stroft mono, excellent line for spooky fish, but last year I did get a couple of bad spools that had quite the opposite effect. No matter how much mud/fullers earth I rubbed on it I couldn't take the shine off it.

I don't know if it was a couple of dud spools but it only seemed to affect the 6lb BS, move up to the 8 and it was 100%. I thought they might have changed something in the manufacturing

Don't get me wrong the reliability was perfect but for some reason it shone like a beacon.

Great. Thanks for the input. Does Stroft normally have a loop at the end of the leader or is is just blunt?
