Default wee bit of advice please

hello

i wouldn't even class myself as a beginner because i haven't even held a rod yet, but after finding grandads old fishing gear i thought i would at least try and learn the basics and see if i like it!

tried to put the old rod together tonight so i don't look like a completely clueless at the weekend and it doesn't appear to want to go together without considerable force which i refrained from doing. not even sure of correct rod terminology here so apologies in advance.....joiny bits made of brass??? don't go as far inside each other as i think they are meant to, do i just fire something oily/greasy on them or are they not meant to go completely inside each other?????

Does the rod have any writing on it?

now i maybe wrong here but...from thee older rods i have seen the "brassie bits" do not go completely inside one another on any of the ones ive know, but an easy way to check it is to find some thing that will fit inside it and make a note how far in it goes then measure it and check this against how much of the other end of the rod fits in?

it has writing on it, says Octopus.

pictures no idea, would probably have to join a computer forum to figure out how to do that!

brassy bits go in just under half way, will try measuring tonight when i have more time, don't want to get it stuck again, was out in back garden for ages last night trying to gently persuade it to come apart and it was freezing!

was thinking silicone grease, works fine on my dive kit???

Octopus rods were made by Edgar Seely. Brass ferules were notorious for sticking. The trick was to rub the male ferule behind your ear or the side of your nose.to get a bit of lubrication.you should be able to see a line around the male ferule which would show where it fits into the female.and it most definately would not fit all the way in .
