I heard there were no springers caught on the opening of Melvin today.

Half a dozen kelts only. I think the drowes is still pretty slow as well with only half a dozen springers so far.

Just around the point to the right is the Bonet river.

You most likely know this but have added this info for those who dont.

As you will know there is good seatrout fishing in sligo bay to.

Have you ever fished Glencar lake? Used to be good, Sean McGuire's father had a 16lb seatrout out of there a few years back, sligo anglers have taken control of it now.
OOOPPS forgot the link;
Lough Gill , County Sligo

Hi all just read this post and laughed to myself,as a 'local' angler it kind of offends me to think that someone would be posting outrageous statements that imply people are actually shooting fish on lough gill.As a angler that fishes the lake from january to november for salmon,trout and pike of which the latter is c&r which is strictly enforced i felt i had to view my opinion!As for the earlier post of never having seen another boat fishing for trout i would think a visit to specsavers would be in order.I would have to say over the last few seasons there have been more boats fishing gill than melvin during the mayfly producing some decent catches,as for fishing from innishfree this would explain the lack of boats to be seen as the most prevalant hatches of mayfly are on the opposite side of the lake from half moon bay,race course bay to church island and this is where anglers concentrate on there fishing! Rant over!!!!!
Tight lines tom.

Rant away!!!!!!!! If you think that the pike are not being shot that's up to you, but I know differant, and have seen it first hand.
Unfortunately they think they are improving the lake. The same as the fisheries board did when they electro fished them out some years back.
One thing we do agree on is there is good fishing to be had on lough Gill but to say there is not good hatches of mayfly on the Isle side is untrue, are you trying to keep it secret
The reason I don't fish the area you do is, its usually got boats trolling for salmon so get in the way of drifts at times.
We could very easily fall out over the keyboard which a lot on here do so why don't we meet up in April and have a couple of days, 1 day on your preferred side and 1 on mine, That way we will more than likely become good friends and fish together again
Good luck
Mike

I'm afraid we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one for the simple reosan being that over the last couple of years there been a ban on salmon fishing on gill hence all competition fishing has been for pike bar two for trout during the mayfly which generally only lasts three weeks to a month on gill.May i put it to that what you seen would be someone taking pot shots at our rising seal population in the lake which is a worrying problem for fish stocks in the lake.On the other hand i would love to fish a cpl of days with you the closer to the end of april if possible as usually the fishing doesnt pick up till mid may depending on the weather.
