Default Where to fish in Kent ??

Guys, new to the Fly fishing and just wondering where in Kent would be a good place to start. My nearest lake is at Hayes but not sure if its any good, not the most picturesque that's for sure. Just looking for a still-water where i stand a good chance of catching some fish.

Thanks

Paul.

I have had many fantastic days fishing at Bewl Water reservoir in Kent. If you have some basic knowledge of reservoir fishing it can be quite productive on its day. However the fishing can be very difficult sometimes.

Other than that i am not too sure...

Try and have a look at flyfishingvenues.co.uk but there are a few around.

I have fished at Tenterden trout waters but wasnt overly impressed albeit it could have been that the 3-4 times I have been there the weather has been awful or the lakes half empty due to drought.

I dont know how close you are to Surrey but I can definitley reccomend Hazelcopse or Frensham!

There are couple of really good Kent anglers on this Forum who I am sure can steer you in teh right direction too.

Best of luck

Ben

Hi, I live just up the road from you. In terms of trout fisheries there are few in Kent which are actually open to all comers. There are some down near to Ashford.

If you are just starting out your best bet is the Oxted fishery, Coltsfield Mill. It's small and easy to fish ........ it's main draw back is it is very coloured water. But they are very friendly especially to beginners and it is very well looked after.

Apart from that you are looking at Bewl (get an experienced boat partner), but do it through the Bewl Bridge Fly Fishers. After that there are the private syndicates:

Kingsfishers
Kingfisher Angling & Preservation Society Home Page

Teise Anglers & Owners Assocition
See below

Darent Valley Fly fishers
Darent Valley Trout Fishers

The last suggestion I can make is to join us merry band of Wandle Piscators, it is really worth it. There are various trips and a heavily discounted coach is a member and generally goes to al the fishing we set up.

In regards to the lake at Hayes, if you live in Beckenham I would definetley give it a go. I used to live really close to the Hayes lake(walking distance) and used to fish it a lot in the evening in Summer and also a fair amount in winter when Bewl was closed. It isn't the prettiest, but the water is very clear and the fish feed quite naturally which is much better than most small stillwaters where the fish don't really feed naturally at all.
At Hayes during winter small lures, damsels and flies like the app's bloodworm work really well. as soon as spring comes, all you need to do is fish buzzers or small nymphs like Diawl Bachs or Crunchers. When it comes to the summer it gets very weedy and fishing during the day is a waste of time, all I do is go late evening and fish a single dry to rising fish and have fantastic sport.
If you fancied giving it a go and want someone to show you the ropes give me a shout.

The easiest place to catch fish is on the small lake. Right towards the end, throw something as close as you can to the river inlet.

When they switch on, sometime around when they were pellet fed in the tanks I presume, it is silly. Took a wee lad down there for his first experience and he pulled three rainbows out pretty easily.

The owner tells me they stock Fridays. So plenty for the weekend.

There are certainly more than 16 fly fisheries in Kent. Most open to anyone. Best bet is to get hold of "Fly Fishing Venues in the South East" booklet, listing over 90 fly fisheries in S.E. England. Up-to-date, cheap. Go to South East Trout for details

Default Today at coltsford mill

Fished for a couple of hours today at Coltsford Mill. Water was v murky after the downpour yesterday. Got two 2 pounders on the big lake. started on Cat's Whisker but didn't like it and neither did the fish, switched to a black and purple montana that a nice chap called Dave who was there gave me. got my fish pretty soon after. Also gave me some good advice/help on my casting. nice place esp if you are still learning like me. (pricey though - £25 for a 2 fish ticket....)
have fun
Alex
