Default Licence price

Can someone please explain WHY if someone wants to fish for sea-trout they are charged a £70 fee for there licence?.
Surely a sea-trout is just a brownie that decided to take a holiday out in the deep blue sea for a day or two.
Any ideas folks.
Same for salmon as well any opinions on them.

Just sent this to the EA to see there response.

Dear sir/madam
Would it be possible for someone in your department to explain why a license for sea trout or migratory trout as you like to refer to them are £70 pounds.
As you will know a sea trout is just a brown trout that has decided to go to sea, mainly as there is not enough food in its natural river.
So if I catch a trout it is the same genus whither its been to sea or not. so now please explain how could you prosecute a person for this? If he only had a non migratory license.
This question is pure interest as I buy a license for salmon anyway.
Mike

I think it's purely because they fall into the 'migratory' bracket MM.

You have to pay their air miles.

They only migrate one way (though that said, the elvers do return to fresh water), to the Sargasso sea to breed. Sea trout and salmon are born in fresh water, then they migrate to the sea, then they return to spawn, sea trout being multi spawners, returning each year. Once an eel becomes migratory you'll never catch it anyway.

I think it's down to the manner they migrate.

Dear Mike

Have you considered that a brown trout is just a sea trout that decided to stay in its natural river..?

We thought it fair to offer a 50% discount for licences to fish for non-migratory trout only.

Lamprey's are not considered as 'fish' in the truest sense of the word due to their different physiology, so are not covered under fishing permits. The term 'Lamprey Eel" is a misnomer.
