I think you'd struggle to have something that's 'castable' by simply attaching 5ft or more of sinking line directly to the tip of a floater - better to use a range of different density polytips to achieve a 'sink tip'

For home made sink tips it's usually the best idea to cut back the floater and splice a replacement length of a lighter weight sinker to it. For example, remove the front 10ft of a 8wt floater and add the 10ft tip of a medium sink rate 6 wt.

ya Pirate or ian woods (grommet) he has them for £9.99 at that price you can try it and see how you get on with it, as not everyone likes them, me for one.
I like a 5' clear tip better! but thats just me.

You could try the airflo poly-leader approach - they are cheap and effective.

A Quick-n-Dirty alternative might be to take 5 to 10 feet of the running end of a knackered sinker (Not the forward end) and attach that with a loop to loop - it won't be really elegant casting but it might do the job.

I got real lucky with sink tips when I scored a Snowbee DT6 ST along with a secondhand orvis reel on Ebay - £12 - result.
