Default I caught a fish...!

With my new rod, my borrowed reel and line, a small box of self-tied flies and the endless patience of Codenamemilo, I ventured on my first foray into fly fishing to the gorgeous Bransford Fisheries this weekend.

Within ten minutes of setting up, and definitely by luck rather than judgement, I caught a rainbow trout on a montana nymph. Shame I freaked out and handed over the rod to bring it in (won't ever hear the last of that one).

A few hours practice and a lot more confidence later, I landed a bigger rainbow on a cat's whisker fly. Terrifying and exhilarating and completely addictive.

Whilst my own performance was definitely not up to Milo's standard who was on ridiculous form, I learned loads, not least that I can't wait to go again.

Totally hooked

Debs is a little modest with her description of the day, she took my amateurish instruction very well (before anyone says, yes, proper lessons are on the agenda in the short term) and by the end of the day was putting out a very neat, straight, well turned over line, and managing to shoot a little line too. Roll cast was ahead of what I anticipated for her first ever time fishing too, a bit of a natural methinks.

Two fish on self-tied flees on the first day she has ever held a fly rod, not a bad start in anyones book.

I'd like to say congratulations on joining the Fly Fishers anonymous club, but i can't. Crack is better, honestly. It's cheaper, less addictive and takes up less of your life. It was the reason for my divorce, and i wasn't even married. Now i find myself shaking and unable to sleep at night, scraping together pennies for my next score.
