Default River pollution will the authorities be interested?

I was out for a walk with Mrs Tackle today along a stretch of river that is being leased to an new angling club this year which I will be joining. I came across various outflows one of which had a very strong smell of detergents and chlorine. As it was quite a significant volume of water I was wondering if it is possible to send samples to sepa or another agency for testing? I would be quite happy to collect various samples from different locations and at different times myself to be tested. Or do I go down the other route of reporting it to an authority and wait for them to do something? Anyone had similar experiences? I am also interested in finding out the general qaulity of the water as it suffered from industrial pollution in the past. Any information is appreciated. JB

If you suspect any form of pollution occurring, contact the EA immediately on 08708 506 506. They will investigate pretty sharpish in my experience.

SEPA have to collect the samples themselves. So you must report it.They will take no action on your samples.I found that out last year.

The EA don't operate in Scotland.

my local river has been ruined by pollution from various sources in the last 20 years.the fines they get never fit the crime,in most cases pennies compared to there turnover.

I would contact SEPA straight away, its in all anglers interests and welfare of fish that any pollution is reported without a thought.
Anglers are the watchdogs of our waterways and polluters should be held responsible for any damage they do.IMO

According to Scottish Environment Protection Agency : Contacting SEPA

SEPA's Pollution Hotline - 0800 80 70 60 - available 24/7

I really would give them a ring straight away if you can.

Jim does that mean that you do not require a rod license.
