Default Dry fly fishing

Hi
does anyone think that a 7wt set up is too heavy for fishing dries (small to medium stillwaters)
cheers

No, I have often used a #7 for fishing small dries. A #5 or #6 may be better but there is no reason you shouldn't use a #7.

On rivers I use the lightest rod set up I can i.e. the one that is still able to cast up or across as far as I need to. For me it's just more fun to tustle with a 2lber on a #2 rod.

However it matters not what you use ....... it's the presentation of the fly that is the most important. So getting the right leader to turn over lightly and not spook the fish.

For small to medium sized still waters I would have thought a #5 or #6 outfit would be more than adequate. A well balanced outfit of this specification is less likely to straighten the lighter hooks and leaders which you will no doubt be using. As has already been said, you will also achieve better presentation ... and on a lighter outfit you will have more fun playing fish.

I've used a #7 with a knotless tapered 12 foot 5lb point & a size 12 dry no problems.

I tend to take the #5 Demon for dries & small unweighted nymphs & the #7 x-flite for leaded nymphs & lures now that I have 2 rods.
