Can anyone tell me what this means with reference to rod material - is it fibre glass? and what would the differnce be between this and more modern materials?

"Fibretube" was the name of a company that was in the Harris and Sheldon (Hardy) group and was based in Alnwick. They made all Hardys rod blanks, both carbon and glass. They also sold their blanks to other tackle manufacturers as well as certain end users.

I made many rods in my life using Fibretube blanks. They were excellent in their day.

If my memory serves me well Hardy used "FIBATUBE" as their name for the tubular glass fibre blanks through the seventies.

They sold composite glass and carbon tubes for non-rod purposes under the same name into the nineties.

If it's a Hardy Fibatube,it will probably have a number on it,you can phone hardies with this number and they should have the information you require.

If it is fibreglass it will be brown, and should be a nice slowish rod well suited for smaller streams if its one of the shorter lengths, or bigger rivers in medium lengths. Softer and deeper flexing than modern carbon, harder to cast a long way if that matters to you. But nice to fish with. Line weight probably as follows, but it should be written on the blank in white ink near the hardy decal (unless this is a home built rod)

up to 7'6 #4

8' #5 or 6

8'6 #6 or #7

Longer lengths mostly #7 up for reservoirs etc

If it is carbon it will be gray/black, probably similar line weights

I could be interested if it is glass and doesn't suit you, shorter glass rods are sought after if in good condition factory built, and might be worth enough to set you up with a full and decent quality modern outfit.
