Default North Wales options

As a beginner can anyone advise me what my options are for fishing this coming Feb as I have a week or so off. Prefer rivers to lakes or reservoirs but willing to listen to advice on either. Opinions gratefully received.

There's nothing much in the Dolgellau area but if you drive the few miles over to the Dee catchment you can get a day ticket for some excellent grayling at the sports shop in Bala.

If small stillwaters are your thing - again your very limited around Dolgellau in Feb.

You could always get yourself over to Eisteddfa Fishery near Porthmadog or a little further North to Graiglwyd Springs at Penmaenmawr - both venues offer good winter sport.

Once March / April comes along then your spoilt for choice with Tal Y Llyn, Trawsfynydd, Brenig etc opening their doors. You've also got Creggennen lakes near Cader Idris and Llyn Cynnwch just outside Dolgellau but I don't think they would be open at this time of year (although I would double check that as it's not somewhere I fish very often)

Presume that the rivers of the DAA are out as they dont have Grayling? Spent the most fantastic day on their rivers last year after buying my ticket from a real gentleman called Marshal if I recall. Re Tal y llyn I would prefer moving water but many thanks for the tip as it looks spectacular from the images.

Think I will give the Dee a bash. Not on account of my experience but I just love rivers, not even that bothered if I dont catch anything although that would be nice. Can you eat Grayling?

PS Got a tip of upstream nyphing which I am supposing is what the name suggests - nymphs cast upstream. Cheers John

Yes basically you cast out a short line about two rod lengths kepping the rod high tracking the line, but make sure you dont get drag and also your flies need to be heavy to get to the bottom to were the grayling are, Try czech nymphing basic technique and you would surprised how close you can get to the fish.

You can eat grayling yes but if I were you id put them back.

John.
