Default River blythe solihull/warwickshire

Just moved to Kenilworth, been looking round at some of the small rivers in the area. Found a gorgeous stretch of the Blythe in a certain area near Knowle, private members signs by the bank, any one know this group. I've been hoping to find some sections out side the Packington estate to fish. I'm also going to look at the Alne and Arrow in Warwickshire. I hope to eventually find an un-fished stretch and maybe approach a few farmers to get permission. I'm currently applying to the Warwickshire fly fishers, but with so many small rivers in the county, I can't beleive there is not some good small river trout fishing in Warwickshire. Even Finham brook in Kenilworth has some promise, I'm sure of caught fleeting glimses of the odd brown in Abby fields park, may be down streem towards the Avon might be interesting. I'm considering giving the Blythe at the coarse fishery of Packington sommer a go simply to get a taster for the river, I'll be just as happy catching coarse fish on the fly.

Plenty of rainbows in the coarse section at Packington Somers

I grew up in Stratford-Upon-Avon and unfortunately river trouting opportunities are few and far between. The Arrow does I believe contain trout above Alcester, it was stocked at some point in the distant past.
The Alne did have a small syndicate around the Henley/Great Alne area.
Good luck with your search, it's always good to hear about somebody looking for unknown fishing.

Cheers

Andy

I live in the south Birmingham area and have been looking for wild trout fishing in the area for some time.
The Blythe holds some good wild trout in the Barston/Knowle area, but as you get down to the Packington estate area its mostly Chub Dace and stocked Rainbows.
A season ticket on 3 miles of river through the Packington estate is around £100.
There is a short section of the middle Blythe at the golf course at Barston, available on day ticket, which holds a few wild fish.
The upper river arrow around Redditch should be a superb Trout river but seems to still suffer pollution issues.Never had a trout from the arrow.
The Alne is a cleaner river than the arrow and does hold a few Trout, there is syndicate water at Great Alne, but not sure if its Trout fishing.
If anyone finds anything in the area i have missed, please let me know, costing me a fortune in fuel at the moment!

I work with a chap who sometimes fishes the Warks Fly Fishers waters - his brother is a member. It seems rather expensive for what it is, although the pools are supposed to be good. But if its their stocked bit of the River Swift thats caught your eye I think you could be dissapointed. I used to fish the Swift for chub as a kid (grew up in Rugby) and its not really suited to trout - I don't think their stockies hang around long. I also used to fish the Upper Warks Avon around that way for chub - its only a small river there, similar to the Swift. I expect you could have good fun targetting the chub on fly gear, and it wouldn't cost you much - if you asked in Banks & Burrs in Rugby they could give you more info about who controls where nowadays. Of course when I was a kid we worked on the rule that you could fish all those small rivers....so long as the farmer didn't catch you There's also the Leam you could explore. River trout-wise you could struggle a bit though.

Hello Proff,
Check out those small streams around Kenilworth, you may get a nice suprise.Nowadays the youth are more interested in video games than fishing,so some of these streams have been left alone for years.
A while back i set myself a challenge to see how many of the local streams and rivers i could catch a trout on the fly. Some of the streams were tiny and overgrown so getting a cast in was a real problem despite a 5ft 6in rod!
I caught trout in 3 of the 4 streams i tried, lovely wild fish with their own distinctive markings.
There is a river that runs through Birmingham called the River Cole.It runs through a lot of parks and public rights of way. There are tyres, armchairs, and every type of human garbage in there! But there is also clean gravel and Trout!
I found a quiet place where i could get a cast in,and was amazed to get three good Trout. If you look at my Avatar above you will see one of the better ones.
I was overjoyed to catch those fish from a river, assumed as polluted that had run past the end of my nose for all those years.
I have not cast a line there since.I walk my terrier, watch the Trout rise in the quiet places, see my shadow make them bow wave to the roots, and take comfort that they swim unnoticed, and untouched by the worm!

I always fancied the look of the river running through Cannon Hill park, I also wondered if the Teme in Sandwell could hold some fish, shallow, gravel, lots of streamer weed. I think I'm determined this year to try and found some brownies where no one would dream to look. I did not realise that so many of the areas rivers are gravel beds, shallow and clear, seen several that just scream trout, or at least quality coarse fish. Just found some pictures on the tinternet of the Sowe south of coventry, they just scream trout. I think if the effort is made, there may be far more river trout fishing than anybody realises, maybe we've just got lazy with fishing still waters where we know there are trout. Either that, or there is a conspiracy to hide any wild trout fishing in the central midlands, this I think is just as likely.
