Default Where would you stop..

Now, i must confess to being a tad (lot) squiffy at the moment, but i thought the purist thread below had some merit! I know we're all flyfishers, but where does the need to catch fish stop? In other words, are you a purist?

I Will use virtually anything to catch a fish on a small stillie, or a ressie, (within the rules) up to and including using a bonefish fly at Lechlade! (caught a 12 pounder on a Gotcha!) but for some reason, i feel guilty at fishing a nymph on a river! Why, i know not but apart from stalking, i hate casting a nympth and retrieving it blind on a river.?? Likewise, while my fgavourite thing in the world is catching a salmon on fly, i' d feel i was cheating if i caught it on worm or toby/rapala/flying C. Just me i know, but does anyone else feel 'dirty' when they fish an alternative method/?

Where's that shiraz....

Cheers

Alex

i love catching grayling. they're my favourite fish. i use to do a lot of trotting in my coarse fishing days. i have been tempted to give it a bash again but nothing beats getting them on 3# on a fly. i've resisted the urge for one whole season now. may try again at some point just to see if i can still do it

No. If it feels 'dirty', I just don't do it. For example.. I've no interest in catching a Salmon on anything other than a fly, and will never try spinning or bait. Don't ask me why though. We're all different I guess, and have our little idiosyncasies, and reasons for doing, or not doing something. Funny one of yours BB with the river nymphing... I'm quite happy nymphing for wild fish on a river... what could be 'purer' than casting a little PTN to a sighted, nymphing fish in a gin clear stream? Much prefer the dry, but nymphing as described above is pretty exciting, and gives me no 'purity' issues.
Boobies, dodgy lures and blobs etc are usually out for me when pleasure fishing a stillwater, and always out for me when fishing for wild browns. Being a comp angler (of sorts) though, I've learned over the years to scoff or frown at such offerings at my peril - the 'reservoir nasties' all have their uses and their day, I just prefer to use them only on mixed, stocked fisheries.

I am an all rounder. I have fished spinner and bait for game fish. This is not because I'm desperate to catch fish. I use these methods because sometimes they are the only viable options and sometimes for the challenge of a different method or even just for a change.
Accidentally capturing trout while trotting maggots for coarse fish feels a bit wrong but I don't really know why

These days I wont fish for stocked fish, that feels dirty to me.

Before anyone jumps down my throat over this... you can fish however and where ever you like, it doesn't bother me

Hi Scratch. Sorry, i agree with you re nymphing on clear rivers, it's what i was trying to get at by 'stalking' in my original post. (blame the wine)! What i don't like is blind nyhmphing on a river, to me it feels wrong! no idea why, but i remember catching about 10 broons on the wylye a few years back on nymph because there was no hatch whatsoever. At the end of the day, i felt completely unfulfilled!
