Default Names of flies - let's have some decorum what?

Have you noticed the names of some of the more common fly creations these days.

"Snatcher", "Cruncher", "Blob" (Eeeeggghhuuugh!!). Even the term "Buzzer", is a rank misnomer because try as I might, I have never heard one of the things that the "buzzer" is supposed to imitate, buzz!

Where are the romantic names of yesteryear?

"Blue Winged Olive", "Welshman's Button", Wickham's Fancy", "Blessed Damozel", "Invicta" etc etc.

Surely there is a better way of naming the new creations?

What do you think?

I quite agree with you .......... but it's a sign of the times.

The same thing is happening with Real Ales. One day they really will change the name of the beer 'Bishops Finger' to Nuns Delight.

Just names different meanings to different people. But the flies are important.

An American fly is the Woolly ******. The origin of the name is not PC.

You show me a chironomid pupa that can buzz Jimmy and I'll give you £1,000!

What about the pathetic trend where guides and other angling celebo wannabies make minuscule changes to an existing pattern and then name the "new" creation after themselves?

There's nothing funnier than letting all the hot air out of their sails by listening to them crow on about their hot new creation and then looking it it and with an earnest tone, saying, "Gosh, isn't that fly just a plain old [insert name of fly they copied]?"

Then try not to laugh as they become totally indignant and launch into a long-winded tirade about how a blinding flash of inspiration lead to their new "creation". Only someone with their vast knowledge and angling experience would think of tying the fly with a silver beadhead instead of the usual gold. And the rest of the story's history because fish have been absolutely impaling themselves on it ever since. . .
