FF&FT - Fly of the month.
I am sure from what I have heard of those who have met him, that Charles Jardine is a very nice man. That said, I just can not get on with his writings. No problem there for either him or me. I ignore or half read the articles, and he will hardly be devastated by that news.
I accept that writing styles are a matter of taste and will therefore not suit everyone. I mean no offence to the man, but February's "Fly of the Month" article has moved me to my keyboard.
Firstly, how can a Snatcher; a fly designed , as stated, for wild Brown Trout, be heralded as the fly of the month for FEBRUARY. Probably, this is an editorial problem as Mr Jardine may not have had, one hopes, February in mind when he submitted this article.
Secondly, the fly drawn (why drawn? It's a fishing magazine not a sketch pad. Photos please) is poorly tied as it is greatly over hackled. Possibly again, a question of taste, but it is not a Snatcher as it was designed to be.
In addition, the article states in saccharin sweet terms that one Ian Barr was the originator of the UV Snatcher. Was he?
But what has really riled my goat is the way Mr Jardine refers to trout as "our spotty little chums". I do not, nor ever will, go fishing for something I think of as a spotty little chum. It sounds like something that belongs in a Jennings book. "Spotty little chums", to me, demeans the whole essence and heart of angling. I'm sorry Mr Jardine, but you have lost the plot there.
