The environmental problems that may be linked to estrogen and other artificial compounds getting into the water are a big topic with anglers here in the US.
The main problem isn't single sexed fish, it's intersexed fish. A big study by the USGS study was published last fall and the problem appears to be much bigger than previously thought with intersexed fish appearing in large numbers in almost every major basin in the USA.

I think we're at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the problems caused by pharmaceuticals getting into the water supply. I remember hearing or reading a statistic and there has been a vast, vast increase in the last 20 years in the number of people who take an Rx pill every day. There's no way that can good for our waters when you consider the fact that once these Rx compounds get into the water they remain there for long periods of time and the impact of these compounds on the environment has never been studied.
