Kev, it's quite easy to learn, and the basics are shown very well (incl leader set-up, choice/weight of flies, and fishing technique) in the DVD - "Czech Nymphing, Upstream Nymphing and North Country Spiders" with Oliver Edwards.

Good luck with it

Hiya - Judging by the number of different request for this kind of stuff, I should really get round to putting some explanatory "taster" clips from my DVD on youtube.

As mentioned in the thread that Cumbrian links to - probably the three most important things are:

Location (what kind of water grayling like in particular conditions and the need to search quickly and move until fish are found)
Leading/tracking of the nymphs (always in contact with point fly whilst allowing full depth to be achieved)
Depth (weight of point fly must typically allow it to reach close to the stream bed within about 5 seconds)

Other things are really tweaks rather than fundamentals (including the right fly or flies for the day - could be very tiny or quite chunky and are always influenced by what the grayling in your stream are used to eating). Spacing of flies can be tweaked, whether the flies are distributed at a shallow or steep angle within the water column (determined by leader length, and relative weight of all flies in the team) etc. etc.

All good fun and there is no substitute for getting out there and practicing.

P.S. as a basic starting point, leader should be a bit shorter than your rod and your flies should be around 50cm apart (a little more or a little less if water is very clear or very coloured respectively).

pm me for DVD details if you are interested.

Tight lines PG

Default Video of nymph tracking

OK so here is my first attempt (I'm not really happy with the compression yet as it looks too blotchy/grainy for my liking when I uploaded it to youtube).

The clip is about half the length of the actual sequence on the main DVD but hopefully should still be useful. As the main film is an hour and 20 min long and covers dry fly and duo fishing too I had to cut short a lot of the info on reading the water as well as flies and leader constructions.

I'm going to try again tonight to render a higher resolution version and see if that looks any better but in the meantime let me know if this is helpful:

Better still - get the DVD if you can. It's very good.
