Default New setup for beginner*

Hi guys, I'm just wondering, what sort of rod, reel, line etc would you recomend for a beginner to the fly fishing world?

My budget is pretty deep so I don't mind paying for quality, although i wouldn't want to pay too much.

I've been looking at a wychwood trufly set or a greys grxi.

any ideas? and also, what lines would be best, everyone says WFx floater for beginers, but what and by who?!

Welcome to the Forum!

Ditto regarding Grommit or Saint Ian Woods to those in the know.

He will gladly help you out and advise you as to what you may need without pulling the wool over your eyes.

Probably the most worthwhile item to spend your money on is a casting lesson or two!!

Wish I had had the money and knowledge of that gem of information when I was starting out; would have saved me hours and hours of frustration!

Try not to let your 'buddy' teach you how to cast unless he is very good, knows what he is talking about and is a patient teacher.

The £50 or so you would spend on a qualified, experienced teacher will save you loads of hassle and it is often easier to listen to, understand and learn from a stranger than your chum

Best of luck and enjoy this wonderful sport and pasttime!

Ben

Hi, and welcome to the best and largest fly fishing forum! Just one question? Where are you going to fish? (River? Lake or Both) Also, agree with recommendations of the other posts! Get in touch with Ian Woods (Grommit) for a really good deal! He's in the tackle trade and really does take care of us forum members!!

So, for River fishing and an all round outfit I'd go for an 8ft.6in, #4/5, weight rod ( I like the Greys Rods) and if your budget will allow I'd go for an Orvis BBS III or BBS IV Reel, then get yourself a Greys Platinum Floating line DT#4/5 line, whichever suits the rod you buy! Or you could go for a Scientific Anglers Mastery XPS DT,floating line again either #4/5, weight!

If your fishing Lakes and Reservoirs! Then a 9ft, #5/6, weight rod for all-round fishing with a WF#6, floating line and maybe a sinking line also, put them on a Orvis LA IV your sorted!

Regards

Mostyn

Default welcome to a great forum dkm1406

Welcome to the forum dkm1406 i agree with a few of the members sunkistbob sugesting you get lessons is good advice. mostyn with his type of line the greys platinum i,ve got lines from snowbee, courtland, airflo and greys and in my opinion it,s the best floating line. But ultimately only you can choose which is best. Almost forgott mostn again with what type of fishing are you going to do river, still or both good luck Alan

May I be so bold as to urge caution my friend! bear in mind that you may start out fishing one type of venue, say a small still water then later find you prefer river fishing I'd hate you to have to buy two lots of gear.
