Default Beginners question about lines

Just bought myself a beginners outfit to go trout fishing at Toft Newton with a mate of mine later in the year.I bought a Ron thompson 9ft6 7/8 with 2 Ron Thompson Avalanche 7/9 reels and 2 ron thompson energizer lines which are wf8 sinking anf wf8 floating.I understand that the energizer lines are rubbish but they came with the kit.Anyway my mate told me to get a wf8 slow sinking line so I bought a leeda galion wf8 intermediate thinking this must be slow sinking but he says intermediate is VERY slow sinking and I need one in between inter and sinking.I've had a look on the tinternet but there only seems to be floating, sinking and intermediate. Can anyone help me out? I'm confused

Thanks
Ricky

Sinking lines come in a variety of sink rates - usually graded by inches per second. An intermediate would be about 1.5 inches a second, a medium sinker something like 3 to 4 inches per second and a fast sinker anything over 5 or 6.

The Airflo DI lines are good as they're known by their sink rate - DI3, DI5, DI7 etc.

Ricky

He may be thinking of 'Hover' style lines that sink very, very slowly indeed and may, in fact, float for a few seconds before sinking beneath the surface and then sink at .25-.5" a second.

Very good lines indeed for a variety of uses but I wouldnt go rushing out to buy one just yet. A good floater and intermediate and, perhaps, a Di3 should just about do you as you learn and progress. Dont get caught up in buying loads of different lines that you may not yet need.

The Pirate will advise you on just about anything you may need to know about lines but he, and many on here, will all say the same thing..........

'have you thought about saving your money and looking a casting or fishing lesson?'

The Pirate does, however, do some highly regarded lines at very good prices.

Best of luck and please, dont ever hesitate to ask any question you may have. There are some highly knowledgable people on here who are always forthcoming with their help.

Cheers for the reply bob but I don't think he meant the Hover type lines 'cause he said don't get a very slow one and don't get a very fast one but somewhere inbetween.By the sound of it I need a di3.Didn't book a lesson 'cause my mate said he would show me how to go on.

To be honest mate you don't need a Di3 or anything more than you already have whilst starting out, master using a floater before anything else anyway.

Don't worry too much about how good or bad these lines you have are at the present, doesn't matter, you are learning and these are gonna get an absolute thrashing whilst you are doing so.

Your mate helping you out to begin with is all well and good, although the advice given re having some qualified instruction is the best you are gonna get at this stage, will be the best money you spend.

Excellent advice from the Pirate as usual- I would not look further than this.
