Default Does the cold affect rod action / line characteristics?

As the title says really.
At what temperature does the carbon rod behave differently with regard to action etc? I guess the same could be said of high temperatures too.
Also the line. Does the cold make it less supple or more "brittle"? On the reverse does high temperature make it more pliable and "stretchier" ?

I only started flyfishing in September, so have not had the chance to try fishing in warm temps yet !!

Sorry if this is a stupid question.
Regards to all,
Gary

Yes, covalent bonds and all that jazz.

Hmmm. Eh? What does that mean in practical terms?
And does Jazz help?

there was a recent post on this that concluded that carbon is uneffected by temperature, line might be though and air certainly has some weird effects when there is no wind,

one i have experienced that was pretty dramatic was ice on the rod, makes it overload and spongy, just the weight of it on the tip.

I found when i went out last ( it was very cold) that after a couple of hours i had to stop and pack away as i could not load the rod at all. I found that it was the line causing the problem as it had got very stiff with the cold.

It has my every sympathy - sometimes I feel the same way.

From empirical experience I don't think the range of temperatures the average fly fisher experiences, say 0 deg c to 30 deg C has much influence on the suppleness of a carbon fibre fishing rod.

The line is a different thing entirely. I have a clear (slime) intermediate line that comes off the reel lile a corkscrew in winter, yet by May it fishes like a dream.

And no, it's not an Airflo!

Default Great topic

Great topic scuba, i agree with ron under [normal circumstances or moderate weather] there would be little difference, but what we are all facing just now is extreme cold and i have noticed a big difference in my equip in the conditions. I dont know the tech aspects of carbon or line but there are also other factors to consider. Cold muscles, stiffness, lack of feeling and the areodynamic effect of cold air as the line flys through it!! [p.s. My equip refered to is fishing gear!!!!!hehe]

I keep meaning to collect the data that will give a definitive answer to this (I'm sure it's probably been done before). In my lab at work I have a piece of equipment called a DMA (dynamic mechanical analyser) this will repeatedly flex a test sample, thus measuring its modulus (stiffness), whilst at the same time heating it between two set temperatures. I've even had the rod parts donated - I just need to get round to running the test.

However from a practical point of view, I can't tell any difference in the rods I use between summer and winter. I know people who claim they can tell the difference though.

in my lab i have a corkscrew, glass and bottle -on different days they perform in different ways. cold, hot, seasonal, personal ....ad infinitum. yes everything makes a diiference
