Default Designing a Wood Burner

After this long spell of cold weather my tying shed is just too cold to sit for any length of time, even for a fat bloke with electric heater. The above has prompted me to explore the possibilities of making my own wood burner to keep warm in my workshop. A local makanick has used a large red Propane bottle to create a successful heater in his workshop so I could go down the same route, but before I do, maybe you forum chaps have similar ideas/ experiences/tips before I start salvaging as no doubt a few of you will have built something similar.
I could go out and buy one but you know where I'm coming from, and wheres the satisfaction in that anyway. Built from scrap has to be the way something out of nothing.

Thanks in advance

Mick

And make sure it's empty before you make the first cut.

or you could try this
Clarke Potbelly - Standard Size Cast Iron Stove - Machine Mart
I know you wanted to use scrap, but it would be a safer option, expansion of metals etc, plus you can keep a kettle on it permanent tea making

Now that MrT really is something new under the sun for me. Never heard of, or seen, this type of conversion on my side of the Pond. Too Cool!

by all means build your own, but for the love of good buy a fully insulated flue.
this will not only keep all the warmth in but to SAVE YOUR LIFE.
last week we inspected a new hous where the gentleman installed a log burner with a single skin flue running under floor.
he went doen about 11pm to make a drink and noticed the floor singing along with 2 0r 3 roof trusses.
so my advice if the flue is running out of the roof of your shed please get it insulated.
reasonably priced from jewsons or builder centre.

Default Good Stuff!

I knew you'd come up trumps chaps, plenty of ideas to go at there. Only thing I'm not sure off is a grate, do you just burn off the bottom of the gas bottle then clean out when cool, cus thats how it looks to me. I assumed I'd need air coming from below with the fire on some kind of grate - could maybe make some holes in bottom of bottle, what do you lot think?

Thanks for all info so far

Mick
