Judge Slams Eastern European Illegal Fishing Activity on local waters.

At Carrickmacross District Court on the 2nd December 2009 a number of cases of illegal fishing activity were brought before Judge Sean Mc Bride. Evidence in five cases of violations of the Fisheries Consolidation Act (illegal fishing methods) were presented to Judge Mc Bride who was no longer prepared to countenance any further plundering of our natural resources. All of the defendants hailed from Eastern Europe and all failed to appear. A number of those before the court had previous convictions for similar type offences. The judge referred to the absent defendants as “those Rustlers from Dublin” and stated clearly and emphatically that he intended to deal severely with these types of people coming before him in the future. “These people are making a mockery of our system” said Judge Mc Bride and he then went on to describe the resource of coarse fish and coarse fishing as the only naturally occurring resource in the Cavan Monaghan area. “The people of Cavan Monaghan need angling tourism and I intend to see English anglers coming back to these counties”. These people are no better than the cattle rustlers of the Wild West the judge went on and he then slated the system of summonsing the defendants not having them turn up and basically evading justice. The Judge ordered that the offenders in future be arrested and brought before him forthwith or to the nearest court to be dealt with severely. Judge Mc Bride was loud in his praise for the fisheries officer’s water keepers and the Gardai involved in these cases and commented on the fine presentation of the cases before him. Judge Mc Bride then handed down the maximum monetary penalties in each of four cases plus large costs and in the case of one of the defendant the judge imposed a two-month custodial sentence. The fisheries officers in charge of bringing these and many other prosecutions in the area in recent times are Chief Officer Paddy Green and assistant chief Ronan O Brien from the Eastern Region protection staff, ably assisted by their officers and locally appointed water keepers along with the local Gardai, all of whom are aware of the shameful abuses perpetrated by the people described by judge Mc Bride.

About bloody time! Well done Judge McBride.

Although personally, I'd prefer an Irish version of the Right Honourable Roy Bean to rule on these matters

Well done the Irish about bloo** time a stance was taken, all we need now is to pass your conclusions and notes onto the welsh fishery officers(do they still exist havnt seen one for about 7 years).
When you get up at the crack of dawn and you get to the venue and here a noise, approach quietly and see 3-4 eastern europeans in wet suits, nets and harpoon guns you have a problem,if anyone is missing fish u know why, especially carp of all fish they eat anything.

In additional to this, poaching has increased in the last few months. All due to the economic downturn. I've been informed of poaching with lights and pitch forks, etc, etc on spawning beds in particular. Its going to be a serious problem all over this year from the high seas to the spawning beds!! Its all down to supply and demand, only for the demand from various establishments these gents would be elsewhere.

There was never an issue with a lad taking one for the table, but commercial exploitation is criminal.

Well done that Judge. Now when those scum bags have paid their fines and done their time he should deport their a**'s and make sure they never come back. Coming here raping our waters,no respect for the country that took them in,they should be put on the plane and sent back to where the came from..

People who live in glass house shouldn't throw stones. (I'm not having a go a you Trout Hunter) I'm not defending anyone here, us Irish are just as bad, the mentality towards catch and release, trophy fish etc etc. Salmon poaching is just the tip of the iceberg! I see no difference between this and introducing invasive species. Anglers knew well about the zerbra mussel did they care? Have we as anglers done anything positive in the protection of our waters, fish etc. It time anglers took responsibility for their own actions too.
