These days the development and design of 3, 4, 5 and more piece rods is such that there are really no disadvantages and in my mind only advantages.

One rod I have is a 5 piece, 6ft 9", 3 wt and it is the sweetest, smoothest rod you could wish for.

The major benefits I see are transportation, so much easier with a multi-piece rod and security - always better to leave gear out of sight and securely locked in the boot.

I suspect that with the disappearance of the metal ferrule the differences are now insignificant and that the differences between rods are more important than the number of sections.

Three or more certainly makes moving the rod in the car a damn sight easier.

Only down side is more Joints that can loosen when casting, but wax or tape stops this.
As stated makes transporting easier.
Only my opinion and not gospel.

For top end manuafacturers, I totally agree.

2 piece rods are very much out of fasion. The 3 or 4 piece (or more ) rods are easier in the boot and for travelling. However, if you are happy with the longer tubes and can cope with the issues of not dropping the back seats, 2 piece rods still have a place. I still have a couple of 2 piece Sage XP's and RPL+'s and love them

As an illustration, I currently have 2 x 9' #5 rods...(unless the posties been while I'm at work )

A 2 piece Sage SP and a 7 piece Greys Missionary.

I love them both and think they both have fabulous actions (and actually fairly similar imo).

However, I personally prefer 2 piece cos they are soooo much easier to rig up and take down.

This question of if/how the number of sections affected rod action was a hot topic about 5 years ago here in the US when a lot of the bigger makers started making their whole rod lineups available as 4 piece versions where mainly they had been two piece before.

On of the main FF'ing mags, I believe it was Fish & Fly (no relation to the UK version or this website) reported on a blindfolded test that was conducted at the big fly fishing show in Denver. They asked 5 testers (fishing guides and casting instructors) to cast a bunch of rods while blindfolded and tell whether it was a 2 or 4 piece rod.

A couple of the testers swore up and down before the test that they would have no trouble telling which was the 2 piece and which was the 4. The end result was that the testers were not able to consistently tell which was which. Their results taken together indicated that they were basically guessing with a 50/50 chance of getting it right.

Obviously not a completely scientific test, but for my lowly casting ability I took it as a good indicator that basically I wasn't giving up anything significant if I started buying 4 piece rods. I won't be replacing the 2 pc rods I own, but I won't be buying any more in the future either. It's just so much easier to transport 4 pc rods and I can still keep them rigged in a 2 pc travel case, so no disadvantage there.

Also, by buying 4 pc rods, I avoid having to buy travel rods specifically for fishing trips that involve flying.

I agree that there is not much difference with today’s modern rods but I do prefer most of my old 2 piece rods and if I can get it in my 2 seater (2 piece 9 1/2 foot) there cant be many cars that they wont fit in.
If I am giving someone a lift they can be a bit annoyed with the rod down there side but hey im fine
And as for Storage at Home When you are paying £500 - £600 for a Rod then its going under the stairs Inside the 6 Foot converted Gun Cabinet my dad knocked up for me with 3 locks.
