Default fly fishing for pike ,,,,

having seen the recent posts in the fly tying section of pike flies , and talking to a few people that go for pike now and then ,, it has started to get the cogs turning and got me thinking hmmm wander if i should give it a go.
i know there are pike in the big Loch and heard of a few folk catching them. but unaware of numbers and sizes present, so not sure if buying pike gear would be worth it or if there is such a thing as a budget pike set up.
And i know i have not mentioned budget available as i would like to find out a few more things first before parting with money that may not be used a lot.
those of you on here who have fished the loch will be able to give an answer to it being worth while or waste of money.

i know absolutely nothing about pike fishing.

James

If the above is true then my reccomendation is to go out with someone that knows what theya re doing, that has caught pike and knows how to deal with them

If you go out on your own you have a good chance of killing a big fish. Pike are not as hardy as they may look and a lot of TLC is needed

chris68 is correct and that should be all you need to know at this stage, but i can tell you that you can fish for and catch good pike at lindores loch in fife, sadly no longer a trout fishery but the perch are in abundence, as are the greenbacks!!! some time ago, whilst fishing for rainbow i caught a 15lb pike on a mini cat!!!!, but as previous post, take care

I've never caught any pike in the loch, but have heard of them being caught in the past. I assume with the loch being managed for trout, most pike would have been chapped?

I fly fish for pike a wee bit on Loch Rannoch which has good numbers of pike. Loch Tummel and Dunalistair also have lots of Pike.

A good place to try your hand might be Loch Freuchie near Amulree-its full of pike (although quite small in my experience). Or closer to you-Loch Ore? as I remember its got a lot of pike too.

My set up is an Airflo HLS 9ft #9 (bought off ebay for £40)
Sage 1685 reel (any reel would do though-like a budget salmon reel)
Toothy Critter clear intermediate wf9 (~£15)

Before going out I'd recomend getting a pair of very long forceps for unhooking and a large landing net! I always use barbless hooks and have yet to have problems releasing a fish.

Cheers,

TS

sadly a few were chapped but as a regular in its trout days i have to guess most were returned. it is my opinion that the pike show more interest in the perch than trout, is this the case?
I can only back this up by having great sucess deadbaiting both and having no luck with trout, but never failing with perch. I myself am no pike expert either, obviously!!!!
Talking to boys who fish for pike there today, they claim fly dressings should be flouro-green/chatruse or pearl/silver/white, not very perchy!?

Lots of good Pike fishing in your area mate. Word of warning though, it's an addiction thats hard to shake off!

Can I be a pain in the **** and suggest that when discussing waters, can we do it by pm guys? Although Pike are fairly prolific I've seen too many good waters ruined by over fishing (it's not just competent fishers who view the forums).......no one comes round and restocks the Pike.

James - I don't mind showing you the ropes once the weather warms up a wee bit mate.

Plenty of advice and discussion on the 'Fly Fishing for other species' area of the forum. I would echo what has already been said so far and stress the need for strong gear and a wire trace.
Pike don't fight like trout (though they can put in one or two powerful runs) and are generally a bit more dogged. Always a good idea to get them in quickly so think more along the lines of brute force rather than finesse.
You'll also find pike fishermen an often strange and secretive breed!
This site is a good source of information:-

Dougie I actually agree with you (for a change) ....

... seriously though its very true what Dougie says, FF for Pike is an ADDICTION.

@Dougie: Cold here as well, no Pike fishing with temps way down below -10, the sea hasn't frozen yet (but if this weather keeps up it wont be long) but the lakes certainly have.
