Wow thatīs pretty amazing, $20 for a reel, even cheaper than the Zhus, though most probably made in China as well. At that price it would also escape duty and vat.
I think those reels and their capacities were for (shorter) silk lines, though you could use it with a pvc line without backing (or 12lb).
Most of the classic reel capacities are grossly overstated. I have one which I bought for a 4/5 rod and bought initially the 3" 5/6wt model and it didnīt even fit a 90ī DT5 without backing. I then exchanged it for the 3.25" model for a DT6 and it only just fit the DT5 with a tiny amount of 12lb backing. I now use it with a DT5 silk and itīs perfect.
That reel is no Saracione, but Iīm sure itīll do its job if all youīre after is a line holder which looks vaguely classic to match a cane rod.

i always wonder about reels that seem so cheap on ebay - particularly from china? does anyone know if taxes are levied on import and how they are calculated? also, are they any good? also looked at fly tying gear from canada and states - same questions? anyone have any knowledge?

Hi kev,

What's the diameter of the Vh3 reel? will it take a dt#3, silk line? I quite like the look of the reel; does it look as good in the hand as it does in the photos of it? I'm tempted to get one!

Thanks

Mostyn

Angler's Roost is a US flyshop with a good name, but at those prices they would have had to be made overseas, though I'm just guessing.
Chinese made does not have to equate bad quality as it's probably CNC anyway and exceeds the tolerances of old reels like Hardys and original VHs which people are happy to fish with, and also the fact that they've now been doing this sort of thing now for 10 years, so they they must be getting better at it like most would - look what happened with Japanese products.
I read articles years back when outsourcing started saying that the Chinese workers were getting 10c per hour, hence the reason for outsourcing and cheaper prices. Whether they still get paid peanuts like that is unknown, but itīs been a both curse and a boon in the same breath as it's changed the face of tackle making. How many curse Asian made products then turn around and don't buy homemade because it's too expensive?
