Default Guddling or tickling trout: myth? skill?

Was talking to an old country codger who was boasting about his childhood feats as a guddler of trout in burns. Hard to believe the old twister about the effectiveness of this method, but he was evidently pullin' em out like rabbits out a hat. Anyone out there got any guddling form - or is it bullshit/myth/old mens ramblings?

I used to catch trout in the streams in my youth , very early teens. The modus operandi for me was to walk very quietly upstream , when the trout saw you they would seek cover and hide under rocks etc. With practice you could see where they went, big uns used to hide their head and leave the body out. If you quietly approached said rock , put your hand over the head end first then reach round to the tail end you could grab the fish. Thoght it was fun in my youth , thankfully the majority escaped or were released, did however take the odd larger one home for tea.

I have guddeled trout also as a small boy in little burns it is part of the apprenticeship.
I am sure i could still do it but i cannot be bothered.
The best thing about kids is they will try anything and persever at it because they are having fun.
I put a stop to it when i pulled a dead baby rabbit out from under a stone.

As a adult i have hand netted our own burn during winter spate and i have caught brownies in the 3 to 4lb size. (fish returned to the loch they had been flushed out of before you ask).

No its very true, I have seen it done a few times and on one occasion a water rat was the result

I did read in a book once that a blacksmith used to hit boulders in the river with his hammer and the fish would float to the surface stunned. I would like to know if this is a myth

That sounds like a myth to me but a good one at that.
