Fishing Report
Flamingo, 12/31/2009
Well, the plan was to be on the road at 5am. The reality was that I woke up late, 5:15 am. Oh well. My son and I were on the road and heading South at 5:45 am. Hit Flamingo and was heading out of the marina by 9:30 am. Low Tide was at 10:36 am. The bay was beautiful, smooth/very light chop and light winds. Air temp was a bit on the cool side with water temps between 61 and 66 degrees, depending on where we where.
We reached our old reliable spot shortly thereafter. While waiting for the tide to turn we started immediately landing some really nice fat trout and ladyfish. Figures that the season for trout opened the next day, but it was lots of fun. They were also feeding very well. We caught them all on arties, with the coffee tube/football jig reigning supreme.
After about an hour the tide started coming in. We deployed a chum bag while we re-rigged 2 rods to catch pinfish so that we can steak them. Our intention was to try to catch some mangrove snapper for dinner. Well, all we caught were grunts, catfish and the very occasional trout. Tried the southwest side of Clive, but the current was ripping thru there so fast that the anchor wouldn’t even set.
Finished the day at spot no. 1 where I caught the big fish of the day, a trout that weighted, on the scale, at just 4 pounds. We were back at the marina by 4:30 pm and home by 7:30 pm (after a stop at Roberts). All in all, we both had a great day!!
Final Tally:
21 seatrout
4 ladyfish
6 catfish
and an assortment of grunts, etc.
Big fish of the day
