Default visit to newcastle

I am visiting some friends in New Castle in July. Two of us would like to fly fish some of Scotlands southern rivers, or rivers/streams around New Castle. We fish for salmon (Alaska), trout(western US) and some salt water fish. We know nothing about fishing in England or Scotland. Can use any info. Thanks
Slazanger

If fishing in England, you'll need to buy a rod licence.

The Tyne flows right through the Newcastle conurbation: FishPal - England - Tyne - Home

The Tweed lies just to the north, delineating part of the border betwixt Scotland and England:
FishPal - Scotland - Tweed - Home

I've only ever trout fished on the Tweed, and it's a fairly big river by UK standards, but perhaps not by Western US standards. An 8'6" to 9', 3#-6# would probably be the best tool, and asking in the local tackle shops is the best plan for fly choice.

We are talking "Newcastle Upon Tyne" - and not one of the other Newcastles???

The "Name" river in the area is the Tweed - lower beats, even in July, are spendy and the main run of fish on the east coast rivers is usually late October onwards....

But within a couple of hours drive of Newcastle you have:
Annan/Nith/BorderEsk/Liddle - All of which are Scottish rivers draining into the Solway.
The Eden and Lune in Cumbria - Ditto but English
The Till/Teviot/Leader/Ettrick - these are first tributaries of the tweed and available quite cheaply in rather more senic surroundings - can fish for salmon but unlikely to see one in July.
The Kale/Ale/Jed/Rule etc - these are second tributaries of the Tweed - so no Salmon fishing but wild brown trout in smallish streams - not easy but great fun.

You could google for Earlston, Selkirk, Galasheils and Peebles each of which has its own club or association.

The river Tees and Yorkshire Dales rivers like the Swale, Ure, Wharfe and Nidd, etc.etc. can provide some super trout and grayling fishing and are worth a look too as they are not a problem to reach from Newcastle.

Hi Slazanger
As you can see from my details, I live in one of the other Newcastle's, in my case the one in the county of Staffordshire, roughly the centre of our country. If this is the one you are visiting, then I'll be able to help.
Best regards
C
