Default 4# River rod

OK folks, I've hunted high and low, scoured the internet, TF and T&S and due to financial restrictions I've narrowed my list so far to 4 rods, Guideline EXP 9' 4#, Guideline AWM 8'9" 4#, Scierra Ferox 8'6" 4# and Snowbee Diamond 10' 3/4#. Are there any plus or minus situations to any of my choices I've made and I'll be looking for a reel for a sink tip and floating line.

As always, things can change, I've not checked the Euro lottery yet

With the exception of bugging in the winter I can't think of too many other circumstances where I'd want a 10ft, 4wt rod for river fishing.

Hi KG...

It depends what kind of fishing you'll be doing, and the venues. The 10ft 4wt is fine for Czech Nymphing/High Sticking, but is not the tool for dry fly or upstream nymphing on small - medium sized rivers, to be hones, I wouldn't be using one at all for anything other than bugging.

What price bracket are you looking at? The T&S reviews as comprehensive as you might imagine. Have you pm'd Grommit on these boards? He will sort you out with a good deal, and it is always worth having a shufte through the classifieds on here.

I don't agree that longer rods are limited to Czech nymphing and bugging. The longer rod can be really useful for fishing spiders and can also be a bonus when fishing nymphs and dries IMO. I find the line control is better.

However, if this is the only (or the main) river rod you plan to own, a 8'6" or 9' is a safer option.

Let your decision be governed by where you fish. As Tigermoth says, A 10' rod is no use on smaller, often overgrown rivers.

I sense you need more confusion in your life.

Have a look at the ECHO range - I have the 7' 6" 3wt in the Carbon range and like it a lot.

Thanks for the replies folks, I'm trying to budget under £200, have looked at Greys and Sonik today but never tried them, I like the Sonik reels but cannot justify the price of a spare spool if I change lines, I've just noticed that theres a 9' 4/5 Snowbee Diamond in the Angling Centre at Stirling, anyone tried one of those?

Better be quick they have them at a phenomenal price. I went to get a 10' #3/4 from the shop on wednesday and they had just sold the last one 30 mins previous! JB
