Default Fly fishing tuition - any recommendations in the Midlands

Hi all - hope you all had a good Xmas and are looking forward to tonights festivities

As I'm 40 next year - I have decided to treat myself to a day or two's tuition. I have been fly fishing for about 5 years and am definately from the 'self taught' school.

Although I'm ok'ish at casting I thought its about time i learned how to double haul and all those other advanced casting techniques you see the seasoned pros doing

Can anyone recommend a tutor in or around the midlands area - help, as always really appreciated

Happy New Year

Paul

Frank Williams AKA Frank on this Forum comes highly recommended by those who have lessons and been guided by him. He has recently made APGAI so can't be as bad as I make out!

Hi Paul
There a few instructors/guides on these boards and if you spend a bit of time doing your research you'll find someone who fits the bill for you. As to who I would recommend, well... I have been fortunate enough to fish with a few of them, and luckier still to count several of them as mates. From the Midlands... well it depends which direction you want to head:

South - to Monnow/Usk land, then Frank Williams, who has recently gained his APGAI - one of our own Monnow Mafia.
West - Severn and Upper Wye, then Andrew Cartwright - Sage, on these boards is vastly experienced.
NW - to The Dee around Corwen - there is none finer than Gwilym Hughes
North - to Derbyshire and Staffs - look up John Tyzack

All are different in their approach but you will learn more in a day with any of these guys than you would in a season of flustering around on your own.

They all have their own websites which will give you a good idea of what to expect.
Best
Dave

'Moth, you have fished with them all! So why aren't you any better?

PS I have fished with only one of them and there is none finer.

John Tyzack gets my vote. I knew he would be a good guide/instructor when he turned up with a landing net and a camera..no rod!

He just won't let you blank. Your best bet would be to get on one of his Tuition weekends, based on the rivers in and around Halifax (don't be put off by that, the rivers are full of fish).

Haven't fished with Andrew but have a passing acquaintance with him and I should think he's pretty good too.

Rob, Rob, Rob... Whilst I'd like to tell you not to be so hard on yourself, I'd be being insincere. And if I've told you once, I've told you a dozen times before not to indulge in this pointless hero worship of yours. Leave the adulation to those with slim waists, pouty lips and t1ts like footballs please. "No" means "NO!!!"

PS... if you ask me nicely, I might just lend you that Czech Nymph book
