Think of dapping floss as a sail that is used to skate your fly away from your drifting boat in ideal conditions. You only need to use one to two rod lengths of dapping floss (depends how windy it is) attached to mono backing - a fly reel is ideal. Traditionally, your dapping floss should be knotted (simple overhand knot) every three feet. Water is death to dapping floss.
Leader ... no more than three feet, the leader shouldn't be touching the water surface. Don't forget that the 'duo' method is a very viable option with a nymph or wet fly tied below the dapping fly.
