I believe a fly reel would do you, only need 2 or 3 meters of floss at the end of nylon then your cast. Never actually done it so some of the guys might manage to give you more solid info.

I feel the best way for you to get started correctly is to see somebody actually dapping, this way you will understand the tackle set up and what is required by you.Dapping is not that easy and it requires patients and skill.I see it for my self during mayfly time in the west of Ireland.

What is normally used is a rod about 16' to 18' long. Any type of reel will do you....... an old fly reel or a spinning reel. About 3' of floss is tied to your line about 4' above your hook.
Hope this is of use to you.

Sean

Think of dapping floss as a sail that is used to skate your fly away from your drifting boat in ideal conditions. You only need to use one to two rod lengths of dapping floss (depends how windy it is) attached to mono backing - a fly reel is ideal. Traditionally, your dapping floss should be knotted (simple overhand knot) every three feet. Water is death to dapping floss.

Leader ... no more than three feet, the leader shouldn't be touching the water surface. Don't forget that the 'duo' method is a very viable option with a nymph or wet fly tied below the dapping fly.

I have only seen it once about 20yrs ago from a boat my mate and I were fishing Grafham and a gentleman was dapping his mate was looking after the boat I remember his rod as it looked like a broom shank we had a bit natter and moved away from his drift on his first drift he caught 3 bows we kept watching him maybe another 2 he had great skill and he later told us you should try it and the fly he was using a daddy I never did try it. He only had a short line of floss approx 5to8yards of floss in front of the boat but his mate was keeping the boat steady with the oars,so scooby180169 you need advice on the line how long etc you may get help from the forum but there may be advice from the major fisheries if some one daps or one of the fishing mags may be of better help to you.

These fellas are selling dapping rods at a good discount.

Search results for: 'Dapping'

I've used one of these rods for a few years and can recommend it.

Dapping is great fun and having seen my mate land a sea trout of just under 5lbs on the dap, can vouch for it's effectiveness.

Here is a classic link from a previous thread which just about sums it all up

http://www.lochlomondangling.com/dap...eptemberp1.htm

It's worth going through all the pages, there are some cracking pics there.

Best

Jon
