Default What was your first rod?

Mine was put together by John Weaver after a gifted Shakespeare jobbie that unfortunately snapped on the the first outing.

What was your first rod?

My first fly rod was a kit from woolies in helensburgh when i was 12,the only flies that were in it were dries and,it took me about 2 months to hook a trout out of the little burn i used to fish, when i eventually did hook one it flew over my head like a startled pigeon! I had to run after it to put the wee chap back

Can't remember the make of first rod I was given but the first one I bought for myself out of saving paper round money was a Shakespeare Sigma Graphite.

The Pirate.

I built my first fly rod. It was on a Fibatube 9'3" #7/8 blank purchased from Mc somethings of Carlisle in about 1978.
Like a prat I later bast==dised it into would you believe a leger rod

The chap I eventually sold it too is still using it

My first rod was a 8" wooden fly rod of some sort given to me by my dad.
I learned to fish with a split cane which is not bad since i am only 34.

My dads first rod was a old tank ariel which i think is pretty cool.
Not sure on length, i will need to ask him, the start of fast actio rods!

Cheers

Munro

An old split cane given to me by my Grandfather. At the time is was great to use, now I look back I see I'm lucky not to have been left permanently disabled by the thing! Man it was heavy.

Heh heh, Scott, that was my first when I came to the UK 10yrs ago albeit in a 9'6" size. Lovely rods for what they were

My very first fly rod in SA was some sort of 60% graphite Elbe model; an 8'6" #6.

Gawd,

We are REALLY going back into dinosaur country here! My first fly rod was a thing called an "Alglass" from some company in Redditch whose name I have totally forgotten. It was a 9' two piece hollow glass rod with metal ferrules. I bought it with the proceeds of a paper round in about 1963 and I think it cost me 39/6d or just short of £2 which was quite a lot in those days. I used that rod for years - certainly up until the late 1970's when it was superceded by more modern glass fibre reservoir rods and then by carbon fibre. My biggest grayling was caught on it from a river in Austria - and it is still my biggest grayling at an ounce over 3lbs.
