Default Smallwater fishing

Hi there,

I am fishing a smallwater in the north east in the coming months, I have no experience on them and normally fish larger waters.

What flies, methods do you prefer to use. I am interested in hearing your thoughts.

Sam

hi mate, start off with small lures fished deep and slow.failing that id be opting for bloodworms fished static with the occasional two foot slow pull up through the water colums and then allowed to sink again.if its a cold clear day opt for a pinkie bloodworm or an apps bloodworm.failing that get a weighted blob of any colour and vary your retrieve from slow pulls,to jerky fig 8s or even strip it like a demon if you get no takes,

tight lines

boobies and blobs are always a good bet on small stillwaters, or apps bloodworms and buzzers

Start off with a red Apps bloodworm. If you don't have several enquiries in the first half hour, it will be a difficult day! Then, at this time of year, its down to cats whiskers in white or probably black, the occasional humungus (10/12), small black flies (12/14/16) such as crunchers, buzzers, B+P spider with flo green tail/tag, Daiwl bach and PT nymph varients with a bit of green or red flash. If fish are seen bulging the surface, they are most probably on tiny emerging midges (18/22), and will accept nowt else!
I have not mentioned Boobies and Blobs, i don't use them, but give them a go if they are allowed. They defo work in various combinations that include some of my recomendations.

Thumbs up

Straight line buzzers, DB's or Crunchers in size 12's is where I'd start. Failing that then I'd pop a weighted apps on the point. If that don't work then a 2 fly set up with Pink blob dropper and Goldhead humungus on a slime line would be next.

I've never fished this fishery but the above methods work on 99% of the small waters I fish during the winter.

I fish small stillwaters each week through the winter, i hardly ever use any thing other than a floating line and long leader , it allows you to fish "deep" and "slow" without getting fouled up in weeds etc. Either lures, nymphs what ever but "generally" in the cold keep it slow fig 8 is ideal ...............works for me every winter

Note i often see "Boobys" recommended in magazines and by other's on forums.............fair enough ................except i know of NO small still waters any where near me that allow them just a point ................
