Default tippet rings question?

hi guys
decided to try some tippet rings as ive been getting tangles on my dropper recently.ive done a search on here about the possibility of them spooking fish.
theres no definite answer to this theory.just a thought though,i use a twist on indicator sometimes and almost every time ive used this method ive had fish swirling at it.so if the fish arent spooked by the indicator, then surely they wouldnt be spooked by atippet ring?would that sound about right?
excuse my ignorance if this sounds like a daft question guys
regards
YC

I've been using tippet rings for some time now and am very happy with them, as far as I can tell they do not spook fish. The Roman Moser 1mm rings can hardly be seen( not with my eyesight anyway,) Thats why I always attach them to the leaders at home and not at the waterside. Drop one in the grass and your chances of finding it are almost nil.

Ive read somewhere that its better to put them on a safety pin and tie them to the leader from there.saves dropping them

Y. C. The safety pin idea is OK for storing rings providing it is fine enough for them to fit. Another method is to thread them on a paper clip which does the same thing.

The difficulty in using tippet rings arrives when removing them from whatever you are using as a holder, they are still easy to lose. That's why it's better to tie them on at home. Using a table with a white cloth also helps if you drop one. Gripping the ring with a pair of small forceps is easier than just using your fingers, the downside of tippet rings is that they are so darned fiddly to handle.

It's easier after a bit of practice

Do any work with them at home, but that is a good idea if you have to take them to the river. As for scaring fish, 1st off the ring is at least two feet from the fly 2nd wait till you see them
Click the image to open in full size. I,m not claiming they float but surface tension is enogh to hold them. there also smaller and neater than a lot of the knots

Tippet rings are excellent but .... they're not a guaranteed way of reducing tangles. The tangles will be due either to the way you're putting your leader together - the relative position, weight and air resistance / bulk of the flies - or the leader material being too light / limp.

Casting? Tailing loops? With multi-fly leaders focus on casting 'smoothly' - gradual and progressive acceleration, no fierce applications of power and keep your loops wider than you would when fishing a single fly (or having a casting lesson .)
