Default nylon for dry fly fishing

I normaly fish wet fly, but aim to try dry this year. I always use 4lb with wet but feel it,s to heavy for dries. 3lb is what i,m going to try first. I notice that most 3 lb seems to be fluro or copoly i dont like either at all. can anyone recomend a good regular nylon with a thin diameter for the dry fly fishing. Also can anyone personaly recomend a good pair of line snips i,ve been looking and all the brand names hardy,c.f,orvis and greys there all £10 and all apear to be good ? Thanks Alan

I'm guessing you will be on the Avon or the Almond Scooby?

I've never fished either, but on the Clyde and other rivers holding big fish, I rarely go below 4lb and I do ok. I still take some back-up line down to 2.2lb, but this rarely gets to see daylight.

Rio Powerflex, Stroft, Okuma Sensitech all work for me. The Okuma stuff is hard to find, but cheap and good.

I get a season ticket for the clyde so mostly there. don,t fish the almond. I thought rio powerflex was fluro/poly ? I prefer regular nylon maxima ultra green normaly i,m only looking for 1 or 2 spools of thinner diameter for the dry. Alan

Alan Rio Powerflex is copolymer. "Fluoroflex" is tRio's fluorocarbon.

As for diameters of different makes, check them out on the web. It's easy enough.

If you can get it in the UK Scientific Anglers 3lb is very thin for its strength, bout the equivalent of 2lb mono
Down here in Aus i use it in 2.4,3,4,4.4 and 5lbs also Rio Powerfelx if good to, I use the 5lb as my base for dry flies in Australia

yes alex i thought that. I would not buy copolymer or fluro carbon. It,s a good regular nylon i,m looking for. I may just stick with maxima unless someone can recomend some other good nylon. I know maxima is popular but i can hopefully find something just as good with less diameter ? Thanks Alan

Stroft GTM, 3.1bs, 0.10mm is better -
Stroft GTM Abrasion Resistant Monofil (100m) | Ted Carter Fishing Tackle

Maxima Ultragreen, 3lb, 0.15mm

correct me if i,m wrong but that makes it 33% less in diameter. do you think 3lb is ok to start with ? or as someone has said 4lb would be better, the river clyde has brown trout in it at 4/6lb caught pretty offten (not with me) what do you think ? also the stroft 4lb would be thinner diameter ? thanks Alan

I would tend to start by using 0.14mm (4.8lb) or 0.12 (6X - 4lb) and go to 7X (0.10mm -3.1lb) if I was having fish turn away. On rare occasions I go down to 8X (2.2lb). Stroft GTM is very reliable, take care to moisten knots, draw them tight slowly and don't over tighten. It's very thin for its breaking strain so take advantage of that and use the strongest you can get away with.
