Default Upper Seven

How good is the fishing in the upper seven around Newtown? Were would you stay, when would you go? All information greatly appreciated.

Some excellent grayling fishing around Llandinham which is approx 7 miles upstream of Newtown. Day tickets are £12 (from memory) - available from the post office in the village. Park next to the pub and you can almost spit at the river from there.

Drop Anthony Cartwright a PM - he's the local grayling guru and will know how it's fishing at the moment - I think his handle on here is "sage"

As Junkie said, Llandinam is the place for grayling. There is a lso a nice shoal in Newtown by where the Rugby club pitch is and easy access. If looking to stay in the area, the Elephant and Castle hotel in the town centre is ok and the Bell hotel as well. There are one or two places out of town worth a look as well. If you want more details drop me a pm and I'll get some tel. numbers for you.

That's about two hours from here, not too much of a problem, but has anyone any ideas further north, the nearer to Shrewsbury the better? And preferably with well-trained fish suitable for a non-river fisher. There's been so much about grayling on here lately that I'm minded to give it a go and a New Year sounds the appropriate time to do it.

Happy Christmas,

Mike

Oakedge, you are right. It is the River Severn not seven. I was wrong and should have known better. I am sorry.

No offense meant or taken. I live 500 yards away from the lovely Severn, although it is the 'middle' and unfortunately bereft of grayling. A few trout but no grayling, I have to go to the Teme or the Lugg to find the 'lady'. ATB, Alan.

i live in newtown, there are some decent spots.. as quoted down by rugby pitch, elephant & castle, above and below dolerw bridge. there are also a few good deep runs into pools which in the summer months hold large trout, and i belive the largest brownie on the severn was caught just above newtown weir as quoted in salmon and trout november issue, weighed in 9lb 8oz.
people just tend to think that all the fishing on the upper severn is in caersws but we do get salmon runs here also, aberbachen is one such area permits held by BAA, abermule also is a good grayling section (unsure who now owns this section)
