Default poor season on mask

flisking back through old articles on the world cup, gave me a shock, only 4 years ago you would have needed more than 2 or 3 fish to qualify, this year you could sneak in with a fish just over a pound, what has gone wrong so quickly?. is it possible that the trout are so preoccupied with roach fry that they have lost all interest in feeding on fly??

The roach fry is a huge problem, but just in the short to medium term. A number of years ago Lough Corrib was a disaster when the fish went on roach fry.....then Lough Conn had the same problem.....and now Lough Mask. The good news for Lough Mask fans is that the other lakes improved after a number of years so I see no reason why Mask won't do the same although it may take a few years.

I am a firm believer that there is a good stock of trout in all the lakes but the feeding habits are always changing so catching the fish can be the problem. I was shown results for the World Cup going back to the 50's and they make poor reading. In fact the lake has fished a lot better 3-4 years ago than it ever did before if the comp resultrs are anything to go by.

Happy Christmas Ronan, looking forward to 2010 season already.

Default Lough Mask

Coming from Scotland don't know much about Lough Mask. But fished it as a social event with about 30 others in June this year. Unfortunately it was 25 degrees centigrade with bright sunshine for the five days, murder for fishing , but got a great tan!!
On one of the days there was a comp for the 30 of us. It was won by an angler who had the only fish of the day, from all 30 of us, it was all of 1lb 1oz.
What you can never complain about or knock, is the welcome that you get from the locals or gillies. they are all fantastic.

It seems to me that all these west of Ireland lakes go through a series of highs and lows. I have no doubt that Mask will be back again.
