Howdy Young Cowboy,

nothing American about the Fly Factory. And as to how to fish them, that's covered elsewhere. I always used to fish them with long slow pulls and little twitches, or drifting in a wave, over the shallow silty parts. For my son, who was nine at the time, I've used the bung and fished them static, but I get bored quickly doing that. But then I saw a guy catch using one about 5ft down over deep rocky water at Raygill and I tried that. It works. Then another time I saw a guy ripping back a lime green Apps and getting huge bow-waving follows, that he managed to convert into hook ups about one in five follows, including a big brown around 6lb and a 4lb Blue. I tried to copy and managed a few follows but I guess my roly-poly technique isn't up to it. Obviously a purely aggressive response perhaps because the non-triploid fish were coming into spawning time. It seemed to pick out the bigger fish.

At this time of year I'd fish it slow'n'low with maybe the odd fast retrieve thrown in for variety. My mate Noeyedeer was bemoaning the fact that he'd never caught on an Apps so I gave him a black one I'd tied using some of his flexifloss, he had one second cast, a little while later he used it to catch his personal best 8lb+ Rainbow. Definitely a fly to try.

Good hunting!
