You'll struggle to find a competitiion for a 10ft, 8wt.

The British Fly Casting Club's 'Have a go' scheme is for rod up to 10ft and 7wt.

The other comps are for -

9ft - 5wt
9' 6" - 7wt
T38 - 9' 10" and a shooting head 38g max, min 15m

Check it out at -

Edit
THe CLA Gamefair has an 'International Saltwater Flycasting Championship' that has no rod restriction.

Away from casting competiions, I think you will find that a 9 to 9 1/2 foot rod is better for distance casting than a 10 footer.

I have done a lot of saltwater fly fishing in my time and when I started doing it I was advised not to go over 9 1/2 feet.

My advisers were right.

If you're after a good line for competition casting, you'll not go far wrong with a Mastery XXD line. They have a long belly so allow you hold more line up in the air without it collapsing on you.

For years I used a 9 foot 9 weight rod for saltwater.

Using a 10 weight shooting head of about 28 feet in length I could get 45 yards with two to three false casts. This is long enough for anyone.

I took a 9 foot 9 weight low cost Cortland rod to Australia this year and using a 9 weight forward taper floating and intermediate, found it worked very well.

The CLA Saltwater Open has been won for the last two years by Ruari Costello using an ECHO 10'0" #8 Extreme Distance rod. He used a Carron "customised" Shooting Head cut out of one of their competition Salmon Heads.
