Default Rod warranty

If you buy a rod new off ebay or one second hand with the oringinal warranty card, does the warrenty still stand with the supplier if you break/ damage it.

I see a lot for sale that state with warranty card so i presume the rod has not been registered and the card is blank.

Dont you need to provide a reciept for repair replacement or is the card its self enough.

I ask as im looking to buy a top end rod that is costly and the guy has the warranty card and paper work but not the orignal reciept.

Would it be better to buy new for warranty sake?

I should have mentioned its an orvis rod.

usually warranties are stated as "original owner" so I would assume that second hand is a bad idea, if you buy from a reputable ebayer then you should ask if its new or used, new and a card should be ok.

A second hand rod wouldnt normally covered by the warranty. All the ones I deal in state the warranty is for the original purchaser only i.e a rod bought from an authorised dealer

Dont know about Orvis as I dont deal with them but most of the other main brands we deal with now insist on a receipt from an authorised dealer to register the warranty or in the event of a claim

Remember to, that even if the original purchaser had a proof of purchase, most warranties have to be registered within a set period of time (21-30 days ia about the norm) of the purchase to qualify for the warranty

Thanks for your replys.

Basically a warranty with a second hand rod is worthless then.

Default Orvis warranty

If the rod is an Orvis with or withought warranty card Orvis will repair or replace for 25 years after purchase/manufacture, rods sold after 2001 will require a nominal £20 handling fee, if the rod is pre 2001 then repair is completely free.
On rods with a flex rating by holding the blank in strong light or shining a torch on it you will see the manufacturing date of the rod.
The above is why Orvis rods and their warranty is second to none.
You have no worries if its an Orvis rod it will be repaired or replaced no matter what happens to it.

A reply from Orvis:

Quote:
Dear Mr. Lum,

Thank you for your e-mail. The warranty on our fly rods is to the original rod holder only. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Which makes sense, they would otherwise set themselves up for unlimited loss.
