Default fishing river for first time

Me and a mate have decided to brave the cold and fish the free stretch of river in amesbury wilts tomorrow between the 2 bridges,has anyone fished this before?will the flies i use on still waters be any good? should i fish dry flies this time of year? i would appreciate any advice as this is my first time fishing a river for trout,thanks

trout are out of season buddy in rivers ..........

TROUT the season is over mate no trout fishing til march. a few grayling in that stretch but not enough to make me fish it tho. jon mcmillan.

oops lol forgot about the closed season on rivers,im new to this type of fishing and have only fished still waters which are open all year round,might still go for the grayling though,what flies will work on grayling? and thanks for reminding me about the close season guys,that could of been embarrasing lol what happens if i catch a trout while fishing for the grayling though?

Unhook it in the water, just slide your hand down the cast and shake it off (easier with barbless or crushed barb hooks). No harm done.

Not fished that strectch but cayght plenty of grayling higher up.

Keep it simple PTN, GRHE, Sawyers Bug should be more than enough, might need gold heads if the river is still running high and fast.

luke, you will need small 16's 18's ptn, copper johns, sawyers killer bugs and shrimp patterns bounced along the bottom if they are there you will hit them. keep on the move. jon mcmillan.

The kind Wye Wizard helped out my Bother-in-Law and I today on the Kennet.

I caught my first ever Grayling today - dead chuffed indeed.

If I learnt anything today it was that you needn't cast far and it seemed far better to flick the fly out and about and concentrate more on ensuring a dead drift.
