Default Leader connection on sinkng lines......

Hi,

Just fishing around for some of your ideas here. To create a tidy connection at the end of my fly lines, I've started using the old nail varnish remover method to strip back some plastic coating and expose the braid core, whipping a loop in the latter as below:

Question is, what do you all do when you come up against a sinking line with a mono core? I'm loathe to try the same as I feel certain it would slip (with the braid you can put a few stitches in it before whipping). I don't want to resort to the horrible braid loop and plastic sleeve method again.......any bright ideas?

Cheers,
M

I use the braided loop but whip it on the fly-line - not a great fan of the plastic sleeve. I normallly whip using Roman Moser powersilk in the bobbin holder, spinning it round the joint, then finising with a small dab of superglue

I think your under estimating the strength of whiping. try it at the back of the line, hook it on to something and try and pull it out. your other loop is a
a top class job. if you do try it would you please let us no how it goes ?

I do the same but cut the braided loop right down to where the doubled up section starts(making it around 2" long) can be a bit fiddly threading the fly line to start from there but patience goes a long way ,when ive got the line tight upto the loop i the add a drop of superglue to hold it in place at the end where i want to whip it on ,i then whip it onto the line and give it a couple of light coats of varnish to stop water ingressing the thread , next step i do is to rub some aquasure well into the end where the fly line meets the loop squashing it in between thumb and finger ensuring end of line is sealed, wipe of the excess and this not only will stop water ingressing up the core but also gives added strength to the braided connection ..

Hi', Matt.
I've been using plastic coated lines since 1960, and I haven't found a way of making a connection that hasn't resulted in the plastic coating cracking where it meets a 'step' in the line. I've tried nail knots, needle knots, whipped loops like yours, a slightly different whipped loop, braided leader loops, plastic cast connectors and the old-fashioned overhand knot at the end on the fly line, and loop the leader to it using a clench knot. I have even applied Vy-Coat plastic varnish to smooth out and taper the joins --- they all crack the plastic coating.
One day, someone might find a way of putting a reverse taper on the butt of a heavy tapered cast, say an inch or two in length, so that it may be inserted up into the core of a fly line and glued in place. Preferably, the thickest part of the butt will match the diameter of the fly line, and the leader and fly line will have matching stiffness. Whoever achieves that will make a perfect continuous tapered line/leader -- and a fortune. TerryC
