Default To stud or not to stud...

I had a pair of Orvis wading boots with felt & studded soles. They were fine, but the felt wore down and the studs then started to come through the sole of the boot. I took them back to the shop for some advice and they just swopped them out for a new pair which have felt soles but no studs (and full credit to Orvis for that!). The question is whether I should put studs in and I would welcome views on this. Do studs make that much difference and is it worth the effort?

Regards

Peter

worth the effort, they are great on slippy rocks. But I do hate the scraping noise they make!

In my view felt without studs is a bit like strawberries without the cream ... OK ... but not as good as it could be.

ah but felt is the devils work. Harbours all sorts of disease to tranfer to other waters. And they come away all too easily. rubber with studs is the best IMO before I get shot down

Hi Peter, you can buy the studs from ebay, about £6.99 with a tool to put them in with.
I think you get about 30, but I just put three at the front of the boot, and three at the heel.
It helps a lot when stepping out of the river onto a grass / muddy bank.
It has worked a treat for me.
Don't you just love Orvis, God bless them I say.

I only stud the outside edge of the heel, saves the stud points from coming into the shoe.

Exactly Jim, horseshoe effect at the front and rear, about 1/2" in from the edge of the sole.

Try not to walk on too much tarmac etc with them and they will last ages.
Length is also critical obviously.
