Default Winter Fisihing

HI

When fishing at this time of year, is it better to go out later in the day or can it still be productive at dawn i.e 8am? I know that every venue fishes differently, but I was wondering if it is worth waiting until say 10 or even midday for the water temp to rise? Or does is simply not matter?

Cheers

I would say you cant really tell but it just depends on your luck on the day .
I would start fishing at 10am untill whenever you have to come off the water and you should get a tug from something!

I agree with stockiebasherno1. In winter in the sunny South, the fish seem to switch on quite dramatically in the half hour or so either side of 9:30am, and fishing in the hour before that can be quite unproductive. Similarly, I often find the last hour or so of daylight in winter disappointing in terms of takes and fish. Which still gives you 5 hours plus of good fishing. All this is probably because of a combination of temperature and light levels.

depending on temperatures, fish feed on and off and not prolific as in warmer conditions,so In my view early and late is the best times as when the winter sun is bright they are not keen, but as the sun dropsfish tend to come on the feed, as if a switch has been thrown. But in the main patience is needed more in winter fishing than summer but fishing in winter can be excellent and fish fight alot harder in my opinion then but are very slow taking and dont chase a fly like in the summer months.

I've noticed over the last few weeks that the fishing is fairly poor most of the day and then goes mental for the last hour or so before dusk

Default It Varies...

However if its been mild overnight with no frost then I think the fishing will be good from dawn.

But If there has been a frost....then it usually takes a couple of hours before it's any good...so from about 11am the warmest part of the day.

Still there are no hard and fast rules.....what I always like is constant weather.....sudden changes tend to mess everything up...especially the fish's feeding habits
