Default Line Storage...

What do you do with yours?
Do you leave them on the reel or spool until the next trip out, what if your not out regularly, and how long is too long???
And if you take them off how and where do you store them???

I've had one trip out in the last five or six weeks, and boy my lines were like coiled springs. So I intend on removing my lines from my reels after every trip and leaving them coiled up loosely in much bigger coils. I then will re-spool them back onto my reels the night before a trip out.
I've cleaned and had my line stretched out over their full length, connected with swivels at each end. Then after an hour or so, I take them down, taking off the swivels and lye them on the ground in one continuous straight line for about 15mins. Then I loosely spool them back up in open loops of about 8 to 10 inches and leave them lying flat in one of my drawers in my tying box.

So how do you care for your lines?

Woz, I am a bit obsessive about my lines, I always remove them from the reel after every trip.
I use the plastic spools cut from large plastic drain pipes, you know, the corrugated type they lay under the roads etc.
Get hold of a piece, and cut several off.
When you have returned after a days fishing, simply hold one in your hands and rotate it anticlockwise to pull the line from the reel until you get to the backing.
DON'T wind it on, or you will get twists in the line.
When you reload the line back onto the reel, I hang mine up on a hook, and simply wind it back on making sure the line does not twist.
Sounds a lot of bother I know, but I can unload a line and re spool it in under two minutes, and I never have a problem with coiling.
The larger the diameter of plastic pipe you can find the better.

How about a photo.Steven.as I'm not 100% clear on what you mean.

Anyway, I just leave them on the reel.

Cheers MrTrout...

I know the corrugated pipe you refer to, I'd not thought about using it like that though, good tip!
Yeah I agree it's important to spool the line on and off as straight as you can, not twisting the line, but consistently rotating the drum to which you are spooling your line.

Would it be more beneficial to leave the line loosely coiled or actually spooled onto something, obviously onto a larger diameter than the reel? I can see leaving it spooled onto the pipe as it's uses for speed. But over a longer period wouldn't the line adopt memory to the pipe for instance?

Curious...

I am stumped too, Jim!

Show and tell time please, MrT

Personally, I leave mine on the reel and still have lines several years old without any problem. That said, I do fish at least once a month, up to thrice a month in season but not all my lines and they are still fine.

I recall someone using a bike wheel with an inner tube cut into strips and left on the rim before winding the line onto that. Seems a good idea.

Between my Salmon/Seatrout/Trout reels.I would not have enough space in my house/garage to store lines off the reel.

I've always thought an old bicycle wheel nailed to the wall might to the trick..

However, I store my line on the reel, in a damp shed, partly because I'm testing the resilience of silk lines.

I'm just curious as to who does what and maybe see if there something easier or better than I do now.

I've a Polyfuse XT Ultra Supple Ridge Line (Floating)
Polyfuse XT Ultra Supple Mini Tip (Floating with clear sinktip)
A Scierra HMT (Floating)
and a Pirate Light Blue Intermediate

All of which will and do show memory if not used weekly...
Could it be the lines themselves, personally I can't see it. I know Airflo have produced some dodgy lines, but I have the same problem with the Scierra and Pirate line...

Any further suggestions, your comments will be greatly appreciated!
