Hi Shauny... Welcome to the forums.

Personally I never put a used fly back into a fly box until it is completely dry.
When changing flies, the fly I'm removing from the cast gets stuck into a fly patch of sorts, I've made my own out of two pieces of foam about 100mm long by 20mm wide and about 10mm thick. Stuck to a piece of old plastic cut to the same size as the foam, and then attached a small 20mm key ring and clip to hang from my vest. Being on a key ring clip I can simply remove it from the vest and sit down at home when the flies are dry and then put them back into their boxes.

So the advice is don't put them back until they are totally dry. Usually hanging them on a fly patch on or from your vest whilst fishing is enough to dry them out, especially if there's a breeze...

Hope this helps.

when you get home get a hair dryer and dry them off with this,It will fluff them up as good as new and they are ready to go again.brand new.

Hi Shauny,

I know the proper way is never to replace a wet fly into your box, but instead put them on a drying patch. For a frustrater fisher like myself who will "chop-and-change" every few minutes that isn't always practical. As obvious as it sounds, I simply leave the boxes open above a radiator or heater on my return and let them dry out that way. If you fish flies that have turkey marabou you'll know when they're done when this starts to "fluff up" again. I've done it this way for years and have some flies in my box that are twenty years old and haven't rusted yet.

Default the deergravey 'flyotron'

there is a thing called the deergravey 'flyotron' invented by deergravey(on another forum) who is obcessed by the hydroscopicity(rate of absorbtion/drying) of flies, the 'flyotron' was created as a storage/drying device between water and flybox/re use,

take a film cannister and drill holes in it, and one in the lid, tie a knot on a piece of cord and put the cord through the lid to attatch it, damp flies go inside until dry

I keep a small plastic box in my coat pocket and put all my used, wet flies in it during the day's fishing. On arriving home I empty them out onto a sheet of newspaper and put them near a radiator. They're dry by the following morning.

I have a small packet of silica gel that I keep in my fly box that appears to work, but best advice as per Woz's post don't put sopping wet flies back in the box, allow then to dry first
