Default knot dilemma

Whilst the weather is pants, I'm sat at home playing about with knots. (beats talking to the wife any day!) is there anyone out there that uses a palomar knot as opposed to an improved clinch knot, for tieing flies to the leader?

I did use the Palomar for a while for bottom fishing in SA but then moved onto the Uniknot which I use for most of my general fishing apart from using the Rapala Knot for big lure, plugs and, perhaps, minkies etc.

The Palomar ends up as a bulky knot and can cover part of the fly and can also make it 'swim funny' hence I wont use it.

I also used to use the clinch until it kept pulling free and began using the improved clinch (tucked clinch??) but didnt like that either. This was around the time my mentor showed me the uni knot and I have been very happy with this knot for around 20yrs.

Personally, I cant recall a time when I have snapped off using the uni knot and now wont use anything else.

You can also use it to join two lengths of line!

Try it below

The Uni Knot

Kind regards

Ben

I also use the uni knot (or grinner). When I did some lab tests I found there wasn't much difference between the uni and the improved clinch - the kreh loop was however significantly better than both - I only use this in the salt though.
If you're bored why don't you tie a couple of hooks to a length of leader material - one with a polomar knot and one with something else (clinch or uni). Then grip each hook in a pair of pliers and give it a decent tug to break it - repeat it a few times and tell us which knot fails most.
